Continuing Care
Addiction Recovery and Aftercare Services
A 28-30 day rehab used to be the standard level of care provided by most treatment centers. This perspective is becoming a thing of the past, as more and more treatment professionals recognize that serious drug and alcohol problems require help that lasts for longer periods of time. Sometimes, people need months of treatment; others need on-and-off support over the course of years as drug and alcohol problems wax and wane. Whatever the case, very few who go to rehab are suddenly “fixed.” This is where addiction recovery and aftercare services can help.
Whether an individual initially goes into residential or outpatient treatment (or switches from one to the other), most benefit from some kind of “recovery maintenance” – often called “continuing care” or “aftercare” that continues for a period of time. Professional help is only part of the recovery maintenance process. For instance, recovery maintenance may include on-going contact (but less frequent than in the past) with your addiction treatment provider, taking steps to reconnect with family members, going to a support group, preventing or managing a slip or relapse, and/or starting an exercise program. All of these facets may play a part in our addiction recovery and aftercare services.
As with all other aspects of care at Practical Recovery, each client’s recovery maintenance plan is individualized.
One of the many advantages of a program like ours is that our clients don’t have to “start all over again” if they have a setback with alcohol or drugs, or if they just want to work on another aspect of their life. Unlike programs that have a “set” timeframe with no way to attend more or less frequently as time goes on, we accommodate the many individuals for whom recovery maintenance needs to extend over a long period of time and/or who need professional care that tapers off as success is achieved, or increases if there are slips or serious relapses.
In Practical Recovery’s outpatient program, clients whose treatment typically involves frequent individual therapy appointments often cut back on visits as they begin to move into recovery maintenance. Some come back to take advantage of our addiction recovery and aftercare services on an “as-needed” basis. Another option for our outpatient clients during recovery maintenance is to continue in one of our three professionally led groups (a women’s group and two co-ed groups). These groups are inexpensive and great for individuals on a budget.
For clients who want extra one-on-one support, Practical Recovery offers a team of recovery companions* who engage in activities with clients, as well as coaches who can help clients accomplish specific recovery tasks – both under the guidance of clinical staff. Companions and coaches begin working with clients while they are still in rehab or outpatient services. Some of our clients have time with a coach every day, for months. For others, contact is less frequent or for a shorter time period.
On a case by case basis, we make available a wide range of activities, including follow-up visits for the entire family here or out of town and daily phone support.*
Finally, we encourage all of our clients to try SMART Recovery support groups, either face-to-face or online. These meetings are free of charge. Clients are also welcome to attend other support groups of their own choosing. At Practical Recovery, our addiction recovery and aftercare services are abundant and ready to support each client as they strive for a new life of complete and lasting recovery.
